The Veiled, Book One

Karlie Ruben notices everything. Three years behind the bar have taught her to read people in three drinks flat. She knows when someone is lying. She knows when someone is dangerous. She knows when someone is not what they seem.

Kai Thorne is all three. He orders whiskey he never touches. His hands are never cold. He walks into a Minnesota winter night without a coat and the darkness seems to follow him. He watches her like she is the only person in the room.

Then her best friend disappears along the same riverbank where bodies have been turning up. The police call them animal attacks. Karlie knows better. Because when she finds Margot alive in the crumbling ruins of an old flour mill, something is terribly wrong. Margot cannot stand sunlight. She does not remember what happened to her. And she can hear Karlie's heartbeat from across the room.

Kai says he can help. He says he can explain everything. He says Karlie has to trust him. Trust is hard when the man asking for it has been lying since the night he walked in.
